Church aids 3 kids suddenly orphaned
PORTLAND — Eastgate Bible Chapel, an evangelical Bible church at 11400 S.E. Stark St., provided meals through the Christmas holidays for three school-age children whose mother was killed late Dec. 11 when a vehicle hit and killed her instantly.
Angela Buyas, 42, and a friend were walking along S.E. Stark Street at 112th Avenue when a Jeep, reportedly driven at high speed by Tareq Temple, 21, of Portland, jumped the curb and hit Buyas who was pronounced dead at the scene. The other person managed to get out of the way.
Temple was charged with second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to Portland police.
Buyas’ brother, Leonard Perez, told The Oregonian his sister was unemployed and was trying to make things work for five children, including three school-age kids, with no father. The father, Mark Buyas, died in 2004 at age 44.
Two of the children, Marissa and Kyle, attend Floyd Light Middle School, and their brother Mark is a freshman at David Douglas High School. The other two children are grown brothers.
Days after Angela Buyas’ death, teachers from David Douglas School District and Eastgate Chapel began a wide-ranging effort to provide meals, clothes, household items, and groceries for the family.
Perez added that public donations for the family can be made to an account opened at U.S. Bank, and all branches will accept donations.
The three younger children expect to remain with a grandmother. In the meantime, teachers and staff will buy clothes and household items through the Celtic Heart organization, which provides money for students in need.
Dan McCue, a school district spokesman, said a memorial fund has been set up at the Floyd Light Middle School.
He said the support from the district was expected, since all of the Buyas kids came through David Douglas schools since kindergarten and are part of the community.
