An update to the story below — Luis Palau passed away March 11. There will be coverage in the April edition of CNNW.
PORTLAND — Luis Palau, Oregon’s 86-year-old famed international evangelist who has battled stage 4 lung cancer for three years, is now on hospice care.
Word of Palau’s rapidly declining health was given by his son, Kevin, president of the Palau team, during a video conference call Feb. 25 with about 100 local pastors and church leaders.
His voice choking with emotion, the younger Palau said his father is experiencing congestive heart failure in addition to the cancer. Doctors released him to hospice care at home after recent stays at Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
“He can’t really speak above a whisper,” said Kevin, who added his father was meeting with extended family, including one-on-one with his 12 grandchildren.
The conference call focused on Portland-area evangelism. Palau’s weakened state was clearly evident in a brief taped message by him shown during the call. A report on the conference call will be in April’s Christian News Northwest.
