NEWBERG — The scenic George Fox University campus in Newberg is known for offering lots of great places for visitors to take photos, but no doubt a new one will be among the most popular.
Next to the university’s Stoffer Family Stadium on the north side of campus is a new Alumni Plaza, with the centerpiece a 9 and 1/2-foot-tall bronze statue of George Fox’s longtime sports mascot, a bruin bear.
The statue is the creation of Oregon artist Ryan Wilhite, a Willamette University graduate who nevertheless has many family connections to George Fox.
The statue was unveiled in a special ceremony Oct. 6 that drew about 200 people as part of Homecoming weekend festivities. With Wilhite standing at far right, some of those attending eagerly posed for photos next to the imposing bruin.
