HAPPY VALLEY — Since 2006, scores of rallies have been held nationally by concerned Christians and Jews in support of modern-day Israel. Although Eugene has hosted such an event in recent years, the Portland area has not since 2009, but will again this month.
The fourth such rally for the Portland area since 2006, the Night to Honor Israel will take place Tuesday, Feb. 26 at New Hope Community Church, 11731 S.E. Stevens Road in Happy Valley. The program begins at 7 p.m., but is preceded at 6 p.m. by a dessert reception.
The rally is sponsored by local members of Christians United for Israel. Nationally, the meetings are the result of efforts begun by John Hagee, famed pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. He formed Christians United for Israel in February 2006 along with 400 leaders from the Christian and Jewish communities. It aims to communicate the need to defend Israel, in light of biblically based matters, with members of Congress.
Featured speaker at this month’s event is Yoram Ettinger, retired ambassador for Israel.
Ettinger is an insider on U.S.-Israel relations, Mideast politics and overseas investments in Israel’s high-tech arena.
He is a member of the American-Israel Demographic Research Group, a consultant to members of Israel’s Cabinet and Knesset, and regularly briefs U.S. legislators and their staff on Israel’s contribution to vital U.S. interests, on the root causes of international terrorism and on other issues of bilateral concern.
Ettinger’s commentaries have been published in Israel and in the U,S., and he has been interviewed on Israeli and American TV and radio. In addition, he was a speaker at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference.
Ettinger served as minister for congressional affairs at Israel’s cmbassy in Washington, with the rank of ambassador; as Israel’s consul general in Houston, Texas; and as director of Israel’s government press office. He is the editor of Straight From The Jerusalem Cloakroom and Boardroom, newsletters on issues of national security and overseas investments.
Admission to the Happy Valley event is $15 advance, $20 at the door. Payment can be sent to: The Praying Church, 1900 Willamette Falls Drive, No. 144, West Linn, OR 97068.
